Located in the southern zone of the country, this remote area contains vast areas of primary forest protected by the Costa Rica government and its National Park Program. Accommodations offer a wide range, from budget hotels and cabins to upscale deluxe wilderness lodges.

Three major national parks are found in the area.

ChirripóNational Park.

This park contains Costa Rica’s highest peak, Chirripó Peak (12,400 ft), an ideal challenge for moderately fit trekkers. As the visitors climb up from dense tropical forest, the vegetation changes to small trees and bushes, and the landscapes transform to old glacial lakes.

If you plan to visit, check availability at the mountain shelter. Maximum capacity is 40 people and no camping is allowed

CorcovadoNational Park

One of the most famous areas in the world for biological diversity and conservation, this park includes more than 134,768 acres of humid rainforest and 5,930 acres of ocean. It is perfect for snorkelling, diving and whale- and dolphin-watching tours.

Abundant and diverse marine life is found in this exuberant and tropical environment, declared a natural world heritage site by UNESCO.

La AmistadNational Park.

La Amistad National Park (Costa Rica-Panama) is home to the country's main indigenous tribes with Meso-American and South American roots. Indigenous relics, such as the mysterious stone spheres, are also characteristic of the region.

Nature and rural-lifestyle lovers will find plenty to see. Visitors find it stunning and challenging to walk through the tropical humid forests abundant in flora and fauna.
